For Duane.
I wrote this piece out of appreciation for the band Justiere. We went on to become very dear friends and it turned out to be the first of several pieces they inspired.
For Mollie, the Mothman, and the moon.
For Bethanie, who can bring the power of a Ferrari and the delicate nuance of a butterfly all in the same song.
My wife has thanked me, over and over, for bringing her home to Pennsylvania. I just wanted to live different days. After we arrived though I discovered that I am descended from people who lived here in the 1700s. I also found friends and colleagues who get me, and welcomed me in. And so I thank my wife, over and over, for bringing me home.
For Mollie and Bethanie who work harder on music and with more skill than just about anyone. I wrote this for them and they were kind enough to work out the harmonies and perform it with me.
For Elizabeth, to whom I am happy to give too much credit.
My grandfather’s life changed forever one winter day. This song came out all at once, just as you hear it, in a hotel room in Waterford Michigan, about a mile from where the story unfolded.
For luthier Jim Relja, who rescued my brazilian rosewood guitar and made it play like the fine instrument it is once again. Thanks to Mollie and Bethanie for building harmony parts, charts to organize it all, and singing it so beautifully.
He cheated death so many times I think he was surprised when it finally came. I'm glad he beat the odds, I got to be his friend for 25 years.
One of my favorite Buddhist concepts is appropriate attachment or, indeed, non-attachment. To be able to let go of material posessions is one thing. To not be attached to the outcome of events or how others feel or behave is something else. Understanding it has been helpful for me.
To being friendly, reliable, and easy to work with.
Around and round we go.
Jim Relja for restoring my guitar. Mollie Ehrlichman and Bethanie Patterson for whom there are not enough words to describe my gratitude, respect, and love. Corin Nelsen at Syncrosonic Productions for continued studio advice and design. Hannabach strings and Renee Ringholz. Benjamin Shotwell, David Haxton, Michael Berkey, Devin Russian, Tony Pickles, Kate Snow, Francis and Suzanne Volpe, Matt Eddy, Ronnie Moondog Esser, Brittney Faust, Jennifer Cunningham. My Patreon supporters Christine Perkins, Jannine Suplee, Charlie Daniels, Myke Hutchings, Bill Binkelman, and Andrew Grafham. And last but never least Ash R., Steph Zebro, and my beloved L.A. Smith-Buxton. For bringing us home.
